Working at Yale since my first semester has made me aware of how the university takes advantage of low-income students. Yale pays me and my peers less than our adult counterparts, despite similar workloads. Because of this, I had to work extra hours to have money to cover living expenses and family emergencies. I had fewer hours to dedicate to studying, enjoying extracurricular activities, and hanging out with my friends.
I am not only invested in the Ward 1 race because of my issues with student employment. I’m from Newark, New Jersey, which has a similar history of white flight and wealth disparity as New Haven's. Going to Yale has put me in a position where I now hold guilt for contributing to the struggles that surrounding working-class communities face. I am supporting Norah because I know she will hold Yale accountable for paying its fair share to New Haven and serving its working-class students and neighbors.
